Dear Residents of Girard Road!

Welcome to the Girard Gas Initiative blog - a local community project aiming to bring natural gas to our street. This blog will be used to post news and resources related to our joint effort in making natural gas available for all Girard Road residents.

More to come soon!

Thank you,

Your new neighbors Sergei and Natasha.

  1. Welcome to the neighborhood! I have lived on Girard Road for 37 years, and one of the reasons I moved to this street was the absence of gas in the street. I grew up in Melrose where I witnessed a friend’s house blow up from a natural gas explosion. Her house was heated by gas. This same family, as strange as it may sound, moved across town, built a brand new home without gas, only to have this home burn to the ground from a natural gas explosion. The second home had no gas line into the home, but had gas on the street. With that experience I resolved not to live on a street with gas. With the age of the water pipes in the town, it is probable that they could crack and leak and possibly impact a gas line. As it is, I hate the idea of living next to a gas tank that is feet away from my front door.

Despite all of this, I do welcome you to the neighborhood, but will rally against the gas line on our street.

  2. Dear Mrs. Rivers,

Thank you for welcoming our family to the neighborhood and for expressing your concern.

I believe that the examples you are giving are actually not about the Natural Gas line, but rather about the Propane Gas, where a house is heated with the propane gas supplied from the tank buried into the ground on the front lawn. Unfortunately this is exactly how our new house has been built. We have a 500 gallon propane gas tank buried right in front of our house. Putting the Natural Gas line to the house would actually allow us to get rid of that tank!

With the Natural Gas supplied by the line, there would be no tanks, and no gas would be ever stored in any volume on the street and there would be nothing what could blow up. Therefore, heating by Natural Gas is considered to be one of the safest and cleanest choices.
